The Endicott altar servers’ retreat combined hands-on liturgical training with spiritual formation for the next generation of church servers.

ENDICOTT, NY — Clergy and altar servers from across the New York State Deanery gathered on May 2, 2026, at Ss. Peter and Paul Orthodox Church for a retreat led by Abp.  Michael, centered on Christ’s words, “For many are called, but few are chosen” (Matthew 22:14). The gathering focused on formation, instruction, and strengthening liturgical service among youth serving at the Holy Altar.

The day began with altar servers assisting in the vesting of the Archbishop before the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy, gaining hands-on experience with episcopal services. Participants were instructed in practical liturgical roles, including use of the trikiri and dikiri (candleholders), handling service books, assisting with ablutions, and learning movements required during hierarchical worship.

In total, the retreat brought together one hierarch, eight priests, five deacons, 10 subdeacons, and 47 altar servers. Following Liturgy, Ss. Peter and Paul Church hosted a festive luncheon, and afternoon sessions provided further training led by clergy and experienced subdeacons, focusing on preparation, vesting, and key processional movements such as the Little and Great Entrances.

Previously, the UOJ reported that the Orthodox Youth and Young Adult Leadership Network held an annual retreat in Chicago.
