Abp. Elpidophoros Chairs National Council of Churches Meeting
Abp. Elpidophoros urged Christian unity and peacemaking during a National Council of Churches meeting in Chicago.
CHICAGO — Abp. Elpidophoros chaired the spring meeting of the National Council of Churches of Christ in the USA Governing Board on May 12 at the headquarters of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America in Chicago. During the gathering, he also met with ELCA Presiding Bishop Yehiel Curry.
In opening remarks to the council, Abp. Elpidophoros emphasized the importance of Christian unity and prophetic witness during periods of social and political division. He said religious leaders must address injustice while remaining engaged with the broader public rather than isolating themselves from those they seek to reach.
“Amid the trials facing our nation and our world, we are called to speak with a unified and prophetic voice against the injustices that arise from the brokenness of creation,” the Archbishop said. Reflecting on the meeting theme, “Peacemaking as Ecumenical Witness in a Divided Age,” he also cited Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew’s teaching that peacemakers must move beyond self-interest and uphold the rights and dignity of all people.
Previously, the UOJ reported that Abp. Elpidophoros led the funeral for Elder Joseph in New York.
