ENGLEWOOD, NJ — Elder Joseph of St. Nektarios Monastery reposed in the Lord at the age of 76 after a period of illness, leaving behind a legacy of prayer, humility, and spiritual fatherhood that shaped countless faithful. Known for his quiet endurance and unwavering devotion, he continued ministering even while undergoing serious medical treatment in his final years.

In a moving tribute addressed to Elder Joseph, Metr. Saba reflected on the elder’s sanctity, writing, “The monk is a man of prayer . . . an inner peace unshaken by storms.” He recalled how even illness “was not an obstacle that prevented the heavenly light from shining on" Elder Joseph's face, adding that the Elder's smile and gentleness remained constant despite suffering. The hierarch also shared a personal moment: “You had postponed receiving your chemotherapy by a day or two in order to hear my last confession.”

Metr. Saba emphasized the elder’s faithfulness, saying, “By your conduct, you taught me the importance of faithfulness to the Lord until the final breath.” He described Elder Joseph as one who drew divine grace through humility and labor, noting that the Lord "poured out His grace upon you abundantly.” He went on further to say, "O earthly angel, you were the greatest blessing God granted me after my coming to America. You were my greatest consolation in my new ministry. How I will miss you, and how I will miss your advice!"

He concluded with hope, praying that the departed elder would intercede for Metr. Saba and all his flock, from the Kingdom of God where the elder now dwells in unfading light.

Previously, the UOJ reported that Abp. Elpidophoros led the funeral for Elder Joseph in New York.
