Diocese of Miami Releases Health Update on Bishop Nicholas of Miami and Parish Life Conference
The update was released in the July/August edition of the diocesan newsletter "The Light," among other news.
JACKSONVILLE, FL — The Diocese of Miami and the Southeast (DOMSE) has issued a health update on His Grace Bishop Nicholas, expressing gratitude for the outpouring of love and prayers from the faithful. UOJ reported in late May that Bishop Nicholas underwent an urgent cardiac procedure after a medical issue was discovered. The surgery went smoothly, and his doctors anticipate a full recovery.
DOMSE reports that over the past six weeks, His Grace has carefully balanced rest with light pastoral duties, in accordance with his physicians’ guidance. He remains deeply touched by the continued support of the faithful and asks for ongoing prayers as he regains strength and prepares to return fully to his episcopal ministry.
We wish His Grace a continued recovery and that the Lord grant his ministry Many Years.
Also reported was the success of the DOMSE Parish Life Conference (PLC), held in Jacksonville, FL. Hosted by Fr. Kamal Al-Rahil and the faithful of St. George Orthodox Church, the multi-day gathering brought together clergy, laity, and youth for worship, fellowship, diocesan business, and spiritual enrichment.
Due to his recent heart surgery, Bsp. Nicholas was unable to attend. His Grace Bishop Thomas presided over the services and conference, ensuring a smooth and prayerful experience for all. The conference was marked by strong participation from the Diocese’s auxiliary organizations. The Antiochian Women elected Elizabeth Baclig as their new president, while the Antiochian Men will hold elections next year. Nora Baca was elected as the new diocesan SOYO president.
Conference highlights included St. Stephen Church’s impressive sweep of both teen and adult divisions in the Bible Bowl, earning them a spot at the national competition in Chicago. The Oratorical Festival featured powerful youth speeches, with Katie Baclig and Sophia Griffith winning the Junior and Senior Divisions respectively. Sophia will represent DOMSE at the national level.
Bishop Thomas also inducted new members into the Order of St. Ignatius, and the Diocesan Ministry Council honored Sueanna Alter with the DOMSE Service Award for her leadership at Camp St. Thekla. Teen SOYO members enjoyed fellowship and activities at the host parish.
The Diocese looks ahead to PLC 2026, to be hosted by St. Nicholas Church in Springdale, Arkansas.
