St. Vladimir’s Seminary Press has released a new hardcover edition of Unseen Warfare, renewing the classic Orthodox guide to inner spiritual struggle with added notes, a new introduction, and refined presentation for modern readers.

YONKERS, NY — St. Vladimir’s Seminary Press has announced the release of a new hardcover edition of Unseen Warfare, a beloved Orthodox spiritual classic that has guided generations of readers in the inner struggle for holiness. First published in English in 1987, the work has remained a trusted companion for those seeking to confront the hidden battles of the heart through prayer, repentance, and spiritual discipline.

Originally written in the sixteenth century by Venetian priest Lorenzo Scupoli, Unseen Warfare gained enduring influence across both Western and Eastern Christian traditions. Its spiritual depth was recognized by St. Nicodemus of the Holy Mountain, who revised the text, and later by St. Theophan the Recluse, who substantially refined and translated it in the nineteenth century. Drawing on Scripture, the Church Fathers, and the ascetical tradition, the book emphasizes that the true arena of spiritual warfare lies within the human heart.

The new SVS Press edition features a fresh introduction and expanded footnotes clarifying the book’s place within Orthodox spirituality and the tradition of the Philokalia. Elegantly produced and newly typeset, the volume is intended to serve both longtime readers and a new generation seeking deeper spiritual formation.
