San Diego Children’s Hospital Halts Gender Transition Procedures
A major California children’s hospital has halted gender transition procedures for minors amid new federal funding pressures.
SAN DIEGO, CA — Rady Children’s Hospital has announced it will stop providing so-called “gender-affirming” medical interventions for minors, citing pressure linked to federal oversight and funding conditions under the Trump administration.
In a statement confirmed by local media, the hospital said it was recently referred to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General for investigation. Hospital officials said the review, combined with new federal policies affecting Medicaid and Medicare participation, prompted the decision.
Rady Children’s Hospital described the move as a “very difficult decision,” emphasizing that it was made to ensure continued service to children and families across the region. While surgical and chemical gender transition procedures will end, the hospital said it plans to continue offering counseling, mental health services, and care coordination for patients experiencing gender-related distress.
The decision follows a broader national shift, as several hospitals have scaled back similar programs in response to federal actions restricting financial support for such procedures on minors.
