UOC Nuns Evicted from Baturyn Convent Without Court Order
Canonical UOC nuns were evicted from their Baturyn convent without a court order despite legal protections during martial law.
BATURYN, UKRAINE — Nuns of the St. Nicholas-Krupytsia Convent of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) were forcibly evicted on January 27 after officials from the state-run National Historical and Cultural Preserve “Hetman’s Capital,” accompanied by police, removed them without a court order, according to UOC attorney Archpriest Nykyta Chekman.
The sisters were expelled from their monastery cells, which serve as their only housing and official place of residence. Despite this, the nuns were put out onto the street, and the doors of the church and residential buildings were sealed.
Fr. Nykyta said a premises-use agreement between the monastery and the preserve was in force through January 27, 2026, and subject to automatic extension during martial law under Cabinet of Ministers Resolution No. 634. “No court decisions exist regarding termination of usage or eviction,” he stated, adding that the actions may constitute criminal offenses.
Previously, the UOJ reported that Moldovan Christians sounded the alarm over an EU-backed persecution and forced progressive agenda.
