HCHC Celebrates Clean Monday with Abp. Elpidophoros
HCHC opened Great Lent with Contrition Vespers and the traditional rite of mutual forgiveness.
BROOKLINE, MA — The community of Hellenic College Holy Cross began its annual Clean Monday Retreat on Sunday evening, February 22, with Abp. Elpidophoros of America presiding at the Katanyktiko (Contrition) Vespers in the Holy Cross Chapel.
Concelebrating with the Archbishop were Metr. Kyrillos of Krinis, Bp. Joachim of Amissos, and Bp. Anthony of Synada. In his homily, Abp. Elpidophoros reflected on the spiritual meaning of katanyxis—compunction and heartfelt repentance—emphasizing that Great Lent calls the faithful not only to outward discipline but to an inward turning of the heart marked by humility and renewed resolve.
Following the service, clergy, faculty, and students approached the Archbishop to receive his blessing and ask forgiveness, in keeping with the venerable custom of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. The rite inaugurated the Lenten journey in a spirit of reconciliation and mutual love.
