The faithful in New York began Great Lent with solemn prayer and ancient hymnody.

NEW YORK — Lenten divine services with the reading of the Great Canon of St. Andrew of Crete were held this week at the Synodal Cathedral of the Sign, marking the beginning of Great Lent for the faithful gathered in prayer.

On Monday, February 23, Metr. Nicholas of Eastern America & New York officiated Great Compline with the reading of the Great Canon of Andrew of Crete. The solemn services drew clergy and parishioners into the penitential spirit of the season.

The Synodal choir sang with tender devotion under the direction of Vadim S. Gan. The wonderworking Kursk Root Icon of the Mother of God was present in the cathedral.

On Wednesday, February 25, Metr. Nicholas celebrated the first Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts of the year, co-served by cathedral clergy.

Previously, the UOJ reported that Metr. Tikhon began Great Lent at St. Nicholas Cathedral.
