St. Tikhon's Monastery Pocket Psalter Officially Released
A decade-long collaboration has produced a new English Psalter designed to unite scholarly accuracy with the living tradition of Orthodox worship.
WAYMART, PA — English-speaking Orthodox Christians now have access to a newly published pocket edition of the Psalter that brings together a fresh translation of the biblical text with a range of devotional and liturgical resources.
The new STM Pocket Psalter, issued jointly by St. Vladimir's Seminary Press and St. Tikhon's Monastery Press, is the result of nearly ten years of collaborative work. Beyond the Psalms themselves, the volume includes selected Patristic writings, the Biblical Canticles, prayers and hymns for Psalter reading, a thematic guide to the Psalms, and a separate arrangement of the Six Psalms. The book is presented in a compact 4.5-by-6.25-inch format intended for regular devotional and liturgical use.
The translation is based directly on the original Greek Septuagint. Project contributors sought to produce a text that would be both faithful to the source and natural within the liturgical life of the Church. Rather than revising an existing English version, the team created a fresh translation while maintaining continuity with well-known English renderings of the Psalms whenever possible.
The effort brought together translators, editors, scholars, church musicians, and members of the communities of St. Vladimir’s Seminary and St. Tikhon’s Monastery. The completed Psalter is divided according to the traditional twenty kathismas and is designed to serve readers in worship, study, and personal prayer.
Previously, the UOJ reported that SVS Press released a new volume on St. Maximus the Confessor.
