President Trump is reportedly supporting a role for Patr. Theophilos III as a potential intermediary in Russia-Ukraine ceasefire efforts.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. President Donald Trump has reportedly endorsed a plan involving the Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem, Theophilos III, as a potential intermediary in efforts to facilitate communication between Russia and Ukraine as part of ongoing ceasefire discussions. This was first reported by the online edition of the Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth.

The proposal emerged following a White House meeting last Thursday that lasted approximately 40 minutes, according to sources familiar with the discussion. The meeting took place amid continued U.S. diplomatic efforts to explore potential pathways toward ending the war in Ukraine. Participants reportedly discussed the possibility of establishing a trusted communication channel between Moscow and Kyiv through a non-governmental religious figure.

According to the same sources, Patr. Theophilos III is viewed as a possible liaison due to his standing within the Orthodox Christian world and previous involvement in humanitarian and diplomatic-related contacts. He is expected to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin later this month, further advancing the proposed role. Supporters of the idea describe him as a figure with perceived moral authority who may be able to engage both sides in dialogue outside formal political frameworks.

In addition to discussions on Ukraine, the meeting also included broader regional concerns, including the protection of Christian communities and access to religious sites in the Middle East. Following the talks, Patr. Theophilos III publicly emphasized the importance of safeguarding religious freedom and maintaining regional stability.

Previously, the UOJ reported that Patr. Theophilos said that everyone thirsts for the peace of Christ as the Holy Sepulchre reopened.
