Abp. Apostolos Issues Encyclical for Dormition of Theotokos

TORONTO — Abp. Apostolos of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Canada called the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos a revelation of humanity’s destiny in God, urging Orthodox Christians to approach the feast with faith and to see the Virgin Mary as an example of selfless communion with God and neighbor.

In an archdiocesan encyclical for the feast, Abp. Apostolos emphasized that the Dormition should not be understood simply as the death of a holy person. Rather, he said, the Theotokos reveals the Christian hope of resurrection and life in Christ. He cited her words, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word,” as humanity’s complete response to God’s call.

His Eminence also drew on the teachings of St. Gregory Palamas and St. John of Damascus, presenting the Theotokos as an image of deification and participation in God’s life. He urged the faithful to bring before her their families, young people, sick and elderly people, and those facing trials.

Abp. Apostolos particularly asked for prayers for the spiritual stability of Orthodox communities in Canada, as well as for Greek schools and teachers and the preservation of the Greek language, Orthodox faith, and cultural heritage.

He also expressed his anticipation of visiting Canada, saying he looks forward to meeting the faithful, visiting parishes and communities, and serving together “in a spirit of unity, love and mutual trust.” He said he approaches his new ministry with paternal love and gratitude to God and Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew.
