St. George Press Publishes Fr. Michael Courey’s Study of Eleven Resurrection Gospels

LOS ANGELES — St. George Press has published "The Resurrection Encounters" by Protopresbyter Michael K. Courey, an in-depth Bible study handbook exploring the eleven Morning Gospels, or Eothina, proclaimed during Sunday Orthros in the Greek Orthodox Church.

The eleven Gospel readings recount the empty tomb and the appearances of the risen Christ to the Apostles, the Myrrh-Bearing Women, and other disciples. The book begins with the Resurrection Gospel appointed for Pentecost and follows the recurring cycle of readings from Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

Each chapter includes the complete Gospel passage, detailed commentary, corresponding liturgical hymns, and study questions for contemplation, discussion, and practical application in Christian life. The book also examines the role of the Morning Gospel within Orthros and explains the symbolism of its liturgical actions.

Courey discusses the Exaposteilaria, Theotokia, and Doxastika associated with the Resurrection readings, while numerous Orthodox icons further illustrate the Gospel accounts. The volume is designed to help readers understand the relationship between Scripture and the Church’s liturgical tradition.

Structured as a twelve-week Bible study, the $30 book can be used for personal Scripture study, parish Bible studies, catechism programs, small-group discussion, academic courses, and preparation for deeper participation in Sunday Orthros. Fr. Courey says the book ultimately seeks to help readers “live resurrected lives” characterized by faith, love, joy, prayer, and gratitude in the light of Christ’s Resurrection.
