World Premiere of Kurt Sander’s 'Serbian Liturgy' Set for Chicago Cathedral

CHICAGO — The Serbian Diocese of New Gracanica-Midwestern America will host the world premiere of composer Kurt Sander’s "Serbian Liturgy" during a Hierarchical Divine Liturgy at Holy Resurrection Serbian Orthodox Cathedral on October 18, 2026.

With the archpastoral blessing of Metr. Longin, the Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom will feature the first choral offering of Sander’s new setting, which is rooted in the tradition of Serbian chant. The composition was made possible through a donation from the Hilandar Foundation.

Bp. Serafim will celebrate the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy, while the St. Romanos Choir will provide the choral music under the direction of Dr. Peter Jermihov.

The service will begin at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Resurrection Serbian Orthodox Cathedral, located at 5701 N. Redwood Drive in Chicago. The presentation is being promoted as the world premiere of Sander’s "Serbian Liturgy."

The event will be followed by a luncheon and fellowship in the cathedral’s social hall. Clergy and faithful from throughout the Diocese are invited to participate in the Divine Liturgy and premiere.

The new composition offers a contemporary choral setting of the Divine Liturgy while drawing on the musical tradition of Serbian chant. The Diocese encouraged the faithful to gather for the occasion and join in prayer and fellowship.
