OCA Music Department Launches New Online Vocal Technique Course

SPRINGFIELD, VA — The Orthodox Church in America’s (OCA) Department of Liturgical Music and Translations has launched a new online course, “Vocal Technique for Choirs,” designed to help Orthodox church choir directors develop healthier, more unified, and more beautiful choral sound. The course, titled "Teaching Your Choir to Sing Well: Beautifying Worship Through Improved Choral Tone," will begin Sept. 28.

The nine-week course uses a physiological and acoustical approach presented in accessible, non-technical language. Participants will study the three principal components of the singing voice and learn practical exercises that can be incorporated into choir rehearsals. Weekly prerecorded lessons will be supplemented by Zoom sessions with the instructor, allowing students to ask questions and receive feedback on their progress.

The instructor, Ray Romanos Herman, is director of music at St. Ephraim Orthodox Mission in Longview, Texas. He holds degrees in Voice Performance and Pedagogy, has specialized training in the science of the singing voice, and has served as a church music director for 30 years. The OCA Music Department is also offering online courses in Basic Sight-Singing and Ear Training for $450 and Basic Conducting Technique for $575. Intermediate and advanced conductors may receive individual lessons with Dr. Peter Jermihov for $600 per eight-lesson block.

Students are expected to devote approximately three to four hours per week to coursework and practice. Registration is limited, and the department is encouraging prospective participants to register promptly.
