Pat. Daniel of Romania Highlights the Sacred Role of Family
Speaking at St. Mary Monastery in Urlați, the Romanian Patriarch reflected on the Gospel reading for the day, emphasizing Christ’s mission of salvation, the sanctifying power of His presence, and the vital role of both parents in the Christian family.
URLATI — On Sunday, His Beatitude Daniel, Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church, addressed the faithful at the St. Mary Monastery in Urlați (Prahova County), focusing on the importance of the family in light of the Gospel read during the Divine Liturgy.
As reported by Basilica News Agency, while drawing from the Gospel, the Patriarch outlined three key teachings: the contrast between the joy surrounding Christ’s birth and the hostility of King Herod; God’s protection of the Infant Jesus through angelic guidance to the Righteous Joseph; and Christ’s return from Egypt to Galilee, underscoring His mission as Savior not only of Israel, but of all peoples.
Patriarch Daniel noted that Christ entered a world marked by violence and sin, reminding the faithful that the Church’s post-Nativity commemorations of martyrs and the Holy Innocents reveal humanity’s deep need for healing and salvation. From the very beginning of His earthly life, Christ embraced the path toward the Cross and Resurrection in order to overcome sin and death.
The Patriarch also emphasized that Christ’s presence sanctifies every land, citing Egypt as an example where, over time, Christianity and monasticism flourished following the Holy Family’s sojourn there. He further highlighted Galilee of the Gentiles as a sign of Christ’s humility and universal love, showing His closeness to the poor, the marginalized, and people of all nations.
Concluding his address, Patriarch Daniel stressed the Gospel’s message on the blessing of the family, underscoring the essential role of both mother and father in raising a child. He warned that the Christian family faces increasing challenges in modern society, calling on the faithful to protect children and strengthen family unity through faith, love, and mutual responsibility.
