Orthodox Church a Key Pillar in Albania’s EU Path, Says Abp. John
Abp. John of Albania highlighted the Orthodox Church’s vital role in the country’s EU integration and ongoing social and spiritual development.
BRUSSELS — His Beatitude John, Abp. of Tirana, Durrës, and All Albania, visited the European Union headquarters this week, emphasizing the Orthodox Church as a central pillar for Albania’s EU accession and European path. The trip coincided with an event marking one year since the repose of the late Abp. Anastasios, celebrating his life, work, and spiritual legacy.
During his visit, Abp. John held high-level meetings with Greek European Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas, MEP Marco Tarquinio, and EPP Vice-President Željana Zovko, among others. Discussions highlighted Albania’s model of religious coexistence, ongoing challenges for religious communities, particularly property issues, and the Orthodox Church’s continuing role in national and European life.
Accompanied by Protopresbyter Charalambos Giokas and MEP Freddy Belleris, Abp. John pledged that the Albanian Church would remain an independent and strong voice. Church officials emphasized that EU accession benefits religious communities, the Albanian people, and Europe, demonstrating the Church’s enduring role as a bridge between Albania and the continent.
Previously, the UOJ reported that Abp. John was named Albania's Person of the Year.
