Florida House Committee Advances Medicaid Funding Ban for Abortion Providers
Florida lawmakers advanced a bill to block Medicaid funding to abortion providers amid declining abortion rates statewide.
TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA — A Florida House committee has advanced legislation that would block Medicaid reimbursements to abortion providers, marking a key step forward for lawmakers seeking to restrict public funding to organizations such as Planned Parenthood.
The House Health Care Facilities & Systems Subcommittee voted Thursday to approve HB 693, sponsored by Rep. Mike Redondo of Miami. The measure would amend Florida’s Medicaid statutes to prohibit payments for one year to any entity classified as a “prohibited entity” under federal law.
Planned Parenthood Florida Action opposed the bill. Policy director Michelle Grimsley Shindano warned that the change could limit access to preventive services for Medicaid recipients and lead to staffing and service reductions at health centers.
Supporters argue the legislation aligns with broader pro-life efforts in Florida. State data show abortions declined from 79,812 in 2021 to 44,206 in 2025, while the number of abortion clinics fell from 57 to 48. A related Senate bill is scheduled for committee consideration next week.
