Abp. Elpidophoros Presides at Feast of the Three Hierarchs
New York City parochial students marked the Feast of the Three Hierarchs and the Day of Greek Letters with a hierarchal liturgy at Holy Trinity Cathedral.
NEW YORK — Students from Greek Orthodox parochial schools across New York City gathered Jan. 30 at the Archdiocesan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity to celebrate the Feast of the Three Hierarchs at a Divine Liturgy presided over by Abp. Elpidophoros of America.
The feast honors Sts. Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian, and John Chrysostom, revered as pillars of Orthodox theology and education. The day also coincides with the Day of Greek Letters, which commemorates the enduring contributions of Greek learning, philosophy, and culture to global civilization.
Participating schools included the Cathedral School in Manhattan, St. Demetrios Preparatory and the William Spyropoulos School in Queens, the Greek American Institute in the Bronx, and the A. Fantis and D.G. Kaloidis schools in Brooklyn. Students and educators attended as part of the Church’s longstanding emphasis on the unity of faith and learning.
In an encyclical issued for the feast, Abp. Elpidophoros noted that the Church Fathers recognized ancient Greek philosophy as compatible with Christian life, affirming its value for spiritual formation and education.
