First Official Feast of St. Dimitrios Gagastathis Celebrated in Trikala

Trikala celebrated the first official feast of St. Dimitrios Gagastathis, honoring the newly canonized local presbyter.

TRIKALA, GREECE — The first official feast of St. Dimitrios Gagastathis was celebrated Jan. 29, 2026, in his birthplace of Trikala, with solemn liturgical services honoring the newly canonized saint.

The Metropolitan Church of St. Nicholas of Trikala hosted the festive Divine Liturgy, presided over by Metr. Athenagoras of Kydonies, with Metr. .Platon of Langadas and Metr. Chrysostomos of Trikki concelebrating. The celebrations began the previous evening with the reception of St. Dimitrios’ holy relic, observed quietly in respect for the victims of a recent factory fire that claimed five lives.

A three-hierarch Great Vespers followed, during which the Synodal Act of Canonization was read, formally recognizing St. Dimitrios Gagastathis as a saint of the Orthodox Church. Known for his selfless pastoral service as a married presbyter in Platanos, St. Dimitrios reposed in 1975, leaving a legacy of faith, humility, and dedication to his parishioners. The Holy Metropolis of Trikki, Gardiki, and Pyli celebrated his life for the first time officially.

Previously, the UOJ reported that the canonization of St. Demetrios Gagastathis was approved by the Greek Church.
