Lenten Retreat Honors Legacy of Fr. Seraphim Rose
A packed Lenten retreat in San Francisco revisited the life and lasting spiritual influence of Fr. Seraphim Rose.
SAN FRANCISCO, CA — A Lenten retreat dedicated to Hieromonk Seraphim Rose was held March 22 at Holy Virgin Cathedral, drawing more than 100 attendees for a day of reflection on his life, teachings, and legacy. Many participants had also attended the English-language Divine Liturgy earlier that morning.
The retreat featured presentations by Bp. James of Sonora and Archpriest Martin Person, both of whom personally knew Fr. Seraphim. Fr. Martin offered a biographical talk enriched with firsthand experiences, recalling conversations with Fr. Seraphim that helped clarify spiritual confusion and emphasized the unity of right belief and right living.
Bp. James spoke on Fr. Seraphim’s enduring theological and pastoral influence, warning against modern distractions and encouraging daily engagement with his writings. He also noted the ongoing work of a ROCOR commission studying Fr. Seraphim’s life and veneration, as well as efforts to gather accounts of his intercessions. The retreat concluded with discussion and fellowship among attendees.
