Patr. Daniel Supports Bulgaria's Opposition to Sanctions on Patr. Kirill
Patr. Daniel defended Bulgaria's opposition to sanctions on Patr. Kirill while preparing to meet with the country's prime minister.
SOFIA, BULGARIA — Patr. Daniel of Bulgaria expressed support for Bulgaria's opposition to proposed European Union sanctions against Patr. Kirill of Moscow, while also confirming that the Bulgarian Orthodox Church's Holy Synod would hold a meeting with the country's political leadership.
Speaking to journalists upon his arrival at the Synod Palace on June 27, Patr. Daniel was asked to comment on Bulgaria's reported stance against including Patr. Kirill in a package of European Union sanctions. The Bulgarian primate described the position as justified, stating that punitive measures against the head of an Orthodox Church would not achieve their intended goals.
"This is certainly a bold move," Patr. Daniel said. "We do not believe that sanctions against the head of a Local Orthodox Church achieve the interest and effect that those who impose the sanctions think they will." He added, "I think the decision is correct."
The Patriarch also confirmed that he and the members of the Holy Synod would hold their first meeting with Bulgarian Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov later in the day. According to Patr. Daniel, the relationship between the Church and the state involves ongoing cooperation on matters of mutual concern.
Previously, the UOJ reported that Patr. Kirill was included in a new EU sanctions proposal.
