The Word Magazine Launches Digital Edition on Substack
The Antiochian Archdiocese is bringing its 121-year-old flagship publication into the digital age while preserving its historic print mission.
ENGLEWOOD, NJ — The Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America has announced the launch of The Word Magazine on the online publishing platform Substack, expanding the reach of one of the oldest and most influential Orthodox publications in North America.
Founded in 1905 by St. Raphael of Brooklyn as Al-Kalimat ("The Word"), the magazine has served for more than a century as a vehicle for teaching, informing, and uniting Orthodox Christians across the continent. According to the Archdiocese, the publication was established as "a pastoral and missionary work for the Orthodox faithful scattered across North America" and continues to fulfill that mission today.
Under the editorial leadership of Bp. John Abdalah, The Word Magazine publishes articles, theological reflections, parish features, and Archdiocesan news. The print edition, which remains the cornerstone of the publication's ministry, currently reaches approximately 20,000 readers throughout the Archdiocese.
The new Substack platform, launched with the blessing of Metr. Saba, is intended to complement rather than replace the print magazine. Archdiocesan leaders emphasized that "This page is not meant to replace the print edition. Rather, it is meant to support its continued growth by carrying the ministry of The Word beyond the printed page."
The digital platform will feature selected articles, archival materials, parish spotlights, and reflections on Orthodox faith and history. By expanding online access, the Archdiocese hopes to continue the mission begun by St. Raphael of Brooklyn: "teaching, encouraging, informing, and uniting the faithful through the written word." Interested parties can subscribe to the magazine here.
Previously, the UOJ reported that SVS Press sought support for a publication on St. Maximus.
