Domes to Be Installed on First Moscow Church Dedicated to St. Paisios the Athonite
Moscow’s first church dedicated to St. Paisios the Athonite advances toward completion, with domes set for installation in 2026.
MOSCOW — A new church dedicated to St. Paisios the Athonite in Moscow is scheduled to receive four domes with crosses by the end of October 2026, marking a major construction milestone in the developing parish complex in the city’s southeast district.
The church, currently rising at the intersection of Samarkand Boulevard and Fergana Street, is the first Moscow church dedicated to the revered Athonite elder. Officials overseeing the project say the building is progressing on schedule, with full completion expected in 2028. Once finished, it will function as a Patriarchal Metochion and accommodate up to 500 worshippers.
State Duma deputy and Patriarchal adviser Vladimir Resin said the installation of the domes will signal the structure beginning to take its final architectural form. He also emphasized that the wider complex will include a parish house, Sunday school, bell tower, and spaces for social services, aimed at supporting parish life in a densely populated area.
The architectural design draws from early Christian and pre-Mongol Russian traditions, while incorporating Serbian and Macedonian influences. Parish activity at the site has already been underway since 2016, with clergy noting that nearby residents—including expectant parents from a neighboring maternity hospital—regularly participate in services and baptisms.
Previously, the UOJ reported that a Utah parish celebrated the dome raising for a new Orthodox church.
