Trump Expected to Nominate Pro-Life Dr. Heidi Overton to Lead FDA
A pro-life physician who has publicly argued that science confirms the humanity of unborn children may soon lead the FDA.
WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald Trump has chosen pro-life physician Dr. Heidi Overton as his nominee to become the next commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), formally announcing the decision Wednesday after a months-long search for a new leader of the agency.
Trump praised Overton in a Truth Social post, calling her a “ROCKSTAR” and saying she had worked closely with the Department of Health and Human Services on his administration’s health priorities. He said she was known for taking on difficult issues and bringing forward solutions, adding that her leadership was needed to help maintain the United States’ position as a leader in scientific discovery and medical treatments.
Overton currently serves as deputy director of the White House Domestic Policy Council and has played a central role in developing and implementing the administration’s health care agenda. A physician by training, she previously served in Trump’s first administration before joining the America First Policy Institute, where she ultimately led its health policy center.
Trump’s selection comes about three months after the resignation of his first FDA commissioner, Dr. Marty Makary. Overton would require Senate confirmation, setting the stage for another potentially contentious confirmation process before the Senate health committee.
Previously, the UOJ reported that a Colorado bill mandated abortion pills on college campuses.
