On his native Imbros, Patr. Bartholomew’s historic patriarchate was celebrated alongside the enduring spiritual bonds linking the Ecumenical Throne, Mt. Athos, and the island of his birth.

IMBROS, TURKEY — Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew said his love of monasticism is among the deepest reasons for his personal bond with Mt. Athos during anniversary events held on his native island of Imbros.

The Patriarch made the remarks Aug. 19 at the Cultural Center of Saint Theodore of Imbros, where the Athonite Home of Thessaloniki and the Holy Metropolis of Imbros and Tenedos marked the 35th anniversary of his patriarchate and the 65th anniversary of his priestly ministry.

Patr. Bartholomew explained that his relationship with the Holy Mountain extends beyond his institutional role as the bishop of Mt. Athos. He spoke of an emotional connection rooted in his love for monasticism, while also recalling that, at his ordination 65 years ago, he received the name Bartholomew of Koutloumousianus — an Athonite name associated with Koutloumousiou Monastery.

The Ecumenical Patriarch, who has visited Mount Athos eight times, also noted the significance of the monastery’s founder, who proudly signed himself “Imbrios,” further connecting the Patriarch’s birthplace with his monastic namesake.

An exhibition presented during the celebrations traced Patr. Bartholomew’s visits to Mt. Athos and highlighted what organizers described as his warm paternal concern for the monastic community. The program also included a lecture on St. Jeremiah I and the spiritual renaissance of the 16th century, emphasizing Mt. Athos’ enduring role in Orthodox spiritual life.

Previously, the UOJ reported that Patr. Bartholomew will mark Ukraine’s Independence Day with the Divine Liturgy.
