Romania Declares Archpriest Aurel Munteanu Martyr and Hero of the Nation
Archpriest Aurel Munteanu has been formally honored as a national martyr, linking his legacy to the Day of the Romanian Martyrs of Huedin.
BUCHAREST — Romania’s Chamber of Deputies of Romania has adopted legislation declaring Archpriest Aurel Munteanu a martyr and hero of the Romanian nation, while also establishing 10 September as the Day of the Romanian Martyrs of Huedin. The measure passed overwhelmingly, with 276 votes in favor, one against, and no abstentions.
Lawmakers also approved provisions allowing national and local authorities, as well as cultural institutions, to organize commemorative ceremonies and academic or cultural events in Romania and abroad. The legislation highlights Munteanu’s ecclesiastical, cultural, and social work in the Huedin and Vlădeasa region, as well as his death on 10 September 1940 following violence carried out under Horthyist authorities in Northern Transylvania after the Second Vienna Award.
The decision was welcomed in Huedin church circles. Fr. Dan Lupuțan, Dean of Huedin, described the recognition as “an act of historical justice,” noting Munteanu’s role in founding churches, supporting schools, and serving in civic life, including as a county councillor and early parliamentary representative of Greater Romania.
Born in 1882 in Merghindeal, Sibiu County, Munteanu studied theology in Sibiu before serving as parish priest in Huedin after 1918, where he became a central figure in local religious and community life until his death in 1940.
Previously, the UOJ reported that the Greek Church honored victims of tragedies in Romania and Trikala.
