Greek Clergy Respond to Court Ruling on Same-Sex Marriage
Greek clergy strongly criticized a court ruling supporting same-sex marriage and adoption.
ATHENS, GREECE — The Holy Association of Clergy of Greece has issued a statement responding to a recent ruling by the Council of State affirming the legality of same-sex “marriage” and adoption. The clergy body expressed regret over the decision, stating it does not reflect the country’s longstanding religious and social traditions.
In its statement, the association argued that the ruling overlooks the conscience of the Greek people and fails to address pressing societal concerns such as declining birth rates. It further contended that the legislation mirrors trends in Western societies and risks creating division within Greek society rather than fostering unity.
The clergy also reiterated the Orthodox Christian understanding of marriage as a sacramental union between a man and a woman, emphasizing its role in family life and child-rearing. Concerns were raised regarding adoption by same-sex couples, particularly in relation to the upbringing of children and broader ethical considerations.
