Bishop in Greenland Urges Faithful to “Melt the Glaciers” in Their Hearts
Bp. Makarios’s Greenland mission highlighted faith flourishing even in the world’s harshest conditions.
NUUK, GREENLAND — Bp. Makarios concluded a weeklong pastoral mission to Greenland on March 22, 2026, calling on the faithful to “melt the glaciers” in their hearts through faith and spiritual renewal. Reflecting on the challenges of ministering in extreme conditions, he emphasized both the hardships and the profound spiritual fruits of the mission.
Despite temperatures dropping to minus 32 degrees, Bp. Makarios described moments of grace during the Divine Liturgy, noting that the rising sun served as a reminder of Christ as the “Sun of Justice.” He highlighted the growth of Orthodox life in the region, including the baptism of a young Greenlander who received the name Cleopas.
The bishop also announced plans to organize a pilgrimage to Romania for young Greenlandic Inuit participants in May. During his visit, he met with members of the small Romanian diaspora, underscoring the enduring presence of Orthodoxy even in remote regions.
