South Carolina House Advances Bill to Block Mail-Order Abortion Drugs
South Carolina moves to block mail-order abortion drugs, reinforcing protections for women and unborn children.
COLUMBIA, SC — After more than five hours of debate on Wednesday, the South Carolina House of Representatives approved H. 4760, a bill designed to stop mail-order abortion drugs from bypassing state protections for mothers and unborn children. The bill passed on second reading by a vote of 81–31, largely along party lines, moving it closer to final passage before consideration by the Senate.
During debate, lawmakers reviewed 19 amendments, adopting three to strengthen the legislation. Supporters—including South Carolina Citizens for Life, the Catholic Diocese of Charleston, the South Carolina Baptist Convention, Palmetto Family, and the South Carolina Association of Pregnancy Care Centers—argued the measure protects women and children from the dangers of mail-order abortion drugs. Lisa Van Riper, president of South Carolina Citizens for Life, emphasized that these drugs circumvent existing laws that provide medically accurate information, ultrasound results, reflection periods, and in-person care.
The bill’s passage comes amid concerns that online abortion drugs endanger women, allow misuse by third parties, and undermine the sovereign will of South Carolina voters.
