Four Mt. Athos Monks Injured in Greece Highway Accident
Four Athonite monks were injured in a highway accident, with one remaining in critical condition.
LARISSA, GREECE — Four monks from the Holy Mt. Athos were injured Tuesday afternoon in a serious car accident at the Longoú toll station on the E65 highway, in the traffic lane from Karditsa to Trikala, according to local reports. The monks were traveling from Athens to Meteora before continuing on to the Holy Mountain.
One of the monks, approximately 40 years old, sustained severe head injuries and was initially treated at Trikala Hospital, where he was intubated. He was later transferred to the University Hospital of Larissa, where he remains under intensive medical monitoring due to the seriousness of his condition.
The remaining three monks suffered lighter injuries and were transported to Trikala Hospital, where they are being treated in the surgical ward. Their condition is reported as stable and not life-threatening, and they are undergoing further examinations. All four monks belong to a cell under Iveron Monastery on Mt. Athos. Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident.
