Bulgaria has allocated $1.7 million to improve the key access road to Zografou Monastery on Mt. Athos.

MOUNT ATHOS — Bulgaria’s caretaker government has approved $1.7 million from the Council of Ministers’ 2026 budget to continue repairs on the road connecting the port to Zografou Monastery on Mt. Athos, according to the Bulgarian News Agency.

The funding is intended to improve safety and accessibility for pilgrims traveling from Bulgaria and other countries to the monastery, which forms part of the Mt. Athos monastic complex, a UNESCO World Heritage site of global cultural and spiritual significance.

Zografou Monastery marked the autumn feast of St. George in November 2025 with a hierarchical Divine Liturgy and procession featuring the saint’s miracle-working icon. The services were presided over by Bp. Ioan of Branitsa, concelebrating with Abbot Archimandrite Gabriel, and were attended by a Bulgarian parliamentary delegation.

During the visit, Bulgarian News Agency Director General Kiril Valchev donated two volumes of archival materials to the monastery’s library, documenting 127 years of the agency’s historical coverage related to Zografou Monastery.

Previously, the UOJ reported that four Mt. Athos monks were injured in a highway accident in Greece.
