Georgia Mourns Patr. Ilia II; Final Letter Urges Forgiveness
Georgia mourns as Patr. Ilia II’s final letter asks for forgiveness while calling for prayer and unity.
TBILISI, GEORGIA — Georgia is in mourning following the death of Ilia II, Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, who passed away on March 17, 2026, at the age of 93. The Patriarch’s body was initially laid at the Patriarchal Residence, where thousands of believers came to pay their respects. Today, it will be transferred to the Patriarchal Cathedral of the Holy Trinity.
Authorities declared a period of national mourning, stating that “by government decree, state flags will be lowered to half-mast on administrative buildings throughout the country.” Citizens lit candles and filled streets in tribute to the Primate of the Georgian Church, demonstrating the deep impact of his nearly five decades of leadership.
In his final letter to the Georgian faithful, Patr. Ilia II wrote: “My spiritual children, please forgive me for my sins and my weakness.
