Thousands in Tbilisi honor Patr. Ilia II as Georgia mourns a towering spiritual leader.

TBILISI, GEORGIA — Thousands of mourners filled the streets of the capital of Georgia to accompany the body of Patr. Ilia II, the beloved primate of the Georgian Orthodox Church, as it was solemnly transferred for public veneration. The Patriarch, who reposed on March 17 at the age of 93, led a remarkable spiritual revival over nearly five decades of leadership.

A large procession of hierarchs, clergy, monastics, and lay faithful escorted the body from the patriarchal residence to Holy Trinity Sameba Cathedral. Thousands participated in the procession, reflecting the profound respect and love held for the Patriarch not only in Georgia but throughout the Orthodox world.
