Abp. John: Pentecost Is God’s Answer to Babel
Abp. John said Pentecost reveals that genuine unity and renewal come through the Holy Spirit rather than human ambition.
TIRANA, ALBANIA — Abp. John of Tirana, Durres, and All Albania used his Pentecost homily to call believers to spiritual renewal, emphasizing that the descent of the Holy Spirit offers humanity a path away from division, pride, and moral confusion.
Presiding over the Divine Liturgy at the Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ in Tirana, the primate reflected on the significance of Pentecost as the fulfillment of Christ’s promise to send the Holy Spirit upon His disciples. He noted that the apostles, strengthened by the Holy Spirit’s descent in the form of fiery tongues, received the wisdom and courage needed to proclaim the Gospel throughout the world. For this reason, Pentecost is traditionally regarded as the birthday of the Church.
A central theme of the Archbishop’s sermon was the contrast between Pentecost and the Tower of Babel. He warned that humanity continues to face the temptation of seeking fulfillment apart from God, arguing that efforts to build society without divine values inevitably lead to spiritual and moral decline. True unity, he said, is not created through power, ideology, or self-interest, but through the transforming work of the Holy Spirit.
Abp. John also urged the faithful to cultivate hearts free from hatred, resentment, and selfishness. Citing St. Silouan the Athonite, he said that love for one’s enemies remains one of the clearest signs of the Holy Spirit’s presence. He concluded by reminding Christians that faith must be demonstrated through acts of mercy, justice, and love, not merely professed intellectually.
