Church hierarchs warn that EU-funded abortion policies threaten Europe’s demographic future, framing the issue as a battle for survival rather than mere morality.

ATHENS — Hierarchs of the Church of Greece have raised sharp warnings about Europe’s declining birth rates, linking recent European Parliament moves to fund abortions at the EU level to a broader demographic and ideological crisis.

On December 10, the Parliament approved the European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI), creating a fund to cover abortion costs for women traveling from countries with restrictive laws. The Church sees the measure as interference in national legal systems, not social support.

Church leaders emphasized that Europe is aging, birth rates are collapsing, and abortion is increasingly treated as a policy choice rather than a last resort. They also criticized the EU’s exclusion of pro-life organizations from funding, calling it ideological silencing.

“Europe without children threatens social cohesion and independence,” said one metropolitan. The Church vows to continue speaking out, framing the debate not as theology, but as a fight for survival.

Previously, the UOJ reported that Georgia condemned the EU's push to repeal anti-LGBT laws.
