MECC Calls for Protection of Civilians in Lebanon
The Middle East Council of Churches warned of worsening conditions in South Lebanon, urging immediate action to protect civilians and uphold their right to remain safely in their homes.
BEIRUT, LEBANON — The Middle East Council of Churches (MECC) has issued an urgent appeal, warning of the escalating situation in South Lebanon and calling for immediate measures to protect civilians and preserve peace. The statement highlighted growing concerns over renewed threats in the region and urged swift, coordinated action.
Framing its message within the spiritual context of Holy Week, the Council called for both prayer and concrete steps to address the crisis. It emphasized that the people of southern Lebanon have endured years of conflict, displacement, and hardship, yet remain deeply rooted in their land and identity. The Council expressed solidarity with those currently facing heightened danger.
Strongly condemning violence against civilians, the Council stressed that human dignity and safety must remain central in all decisions. It urged the international community and local authorities to prioritize the protection of life, reject forced displacement, uphold humanitarian law, and ensure stability for the population.
Concluding its appeal, the Council reaffirmed that safeguarding civilians is a moral obligation and voiced hope that present suffering may give way to a future marked by peace, justice, and dignity for all.
