WASHINGTON, D.C. — After President Donald Trump told House Republicans they should be “a little bit flexible” on the Hyde Amendment, some White House officials are reportedly seeking to clarify his remarks following backlash from pro-life leaders.
The Hyde Amendment, a longstanding federal policy, prohibits taxpayer dollars from funding elective abortions. Many pro-life leaders and Republican lawmakers immediately rejected any suggestion of compromise. “We are not going to change the standard that we’re not going to use taxpayer funding for abortion,” said Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt emphasized that the administration has not altered its policy. Trump signed an executive order on his fourth day in office to reinforce Hyde protections, ensuring federal funds are not used for elective abortions. Pro-life advocates remain focused on ensuring Senate Republicans do not compromise Hyde in ongoing health care negotiations.
