New Book Collects Original Death to the World Zines
A new book gathers the complete original run of the influential Orthodox punk zine Death to the World.
PLATINA, CA — A new 400-page volume, Death to the World Vol. One: Genesis, compiles the complete original 1990s run of the Orthodox zine Death to the World, along with rare memorabilia, editor reflections, and even a letter from Mr. Rogers. Published by St. Herman of Alaska Monastery, the book includes all 12 original issues and material from related outreach publications Alaska the Final Frontier and Mother Wisdom.
Launched in 1994 as an evangelistic effort aimed at teens in the punk subculture, Death to the World was distributed at shows and underground venues, at one point reaching an estimated 50,000 copies in circulation. A founding contributor was Justin Marler, who later spent seven years in monastic life after recording with the band Sleep.
The zine was revived eight years after its initial run by converts from St. Barnabas Antiochian Orthodox Church. The new volume, now available for pre-order with shipping planned for Paschaltide 2026, also provides QR codes for readers to download and distribute printable copies.
