Mount Thabor Academy Hosts Virtual Theology Program
A new 12-week course will explore how suffering, united to Christ, becomes a path to divine glory.
NEW YORK — Fr. Samuel Davis will lead a 12-week virtual course in collaboration with Mount Thabor Academy, offering a theological and historical examination of how the Orthodox Church understands the transformation of human suffering into divine glory.
Titled around the theme of “martyric salvation,” the course will explore the belief that Christ is uniquely present in the suffering of the oppressed and that redemption is realized through an ascetic life grounded in obedience, prayer, righteousness, and sacrificial love. Participants will study how suffering, united to Christ, becomes a path to sanctification and glorification.
Drawing from Orthodox Tradition, the curriculum will examine the suffering of Greeks under Ottoman rule, Russians under Communism, Native Americans during genocide, and enslaved Africans in America. The course will also engage the thought of James Cone, incorporating insights from Black Liberation Theology into a broader Orthodox spiritual framework. Registration is available online.
