Metr. Nicholas marked the Triumph of Orthodoxy in New York with solemn services, veneration of the Kursk Root Icon, and a call to steadfast faith.

NEW YORK — With the beginning of Great Lent, Metr. Nicholas of Eastern America & New York officiated divine services for the Sunday of the Triumph of Orthodoxy at the Synodal Cathedral of the Sign in New York City. The First Hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia (ROCOR) celebrated the second Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts on Feb. 27 and Divine Liturgy for the feast of the Holy Great-Martyr Theodore the Tyro the following day.

On March 1, Metr. Nicholas celebrated the Liturgy, joined by clergy from across the region. The services were held under the aegis of the wonderworking Kursk Root Icon of the Mother of God, placed in the center of the cathedral alongside an icon of the Savior formerly housed in Metr. Hilarion’s chambers.

In his sermon, he urged the faithful to strengthen and preserve the Orthodox faith and to seek the intercessions of the saints. A festive luncheon followed in the cathedral hall.

Previously, the UOJ reported that Metr. Tikhon began Great Lent at St. Nicholas Cathedral.
