Trump Welcomes Abp. Elpidophoros to the White House for Greek Independence Day
Abp. Elpidophoros highlighted enduring U.S.–Greek ties as President Trump hosted a landmark Independence Day celebration at the White House.
WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald Trump welcomed Greek Americans to the White House for the 205th anniversary of Greek Independence Day, with remarks highlighting the historic ties between the United States and Greece. The annual celebration, now in its 40th year, continues a longstanding presidential tradition honoring the Greek-American community.
Abp. Elpidophoros of America delivered extensive remarks emphasizing the deepening alliance between the two nations, particularly in defense, energy, and shipping. He noted the shared anniversaries in 2026—America’s 250th and Greece’s 205th—and framed them as part of a broader “noble experiment in self-governance,” drawing on the democratic legacy linking ancient Greece to modern America.
The Archbishop also thanked the President for his support of Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, including ongoing efforts to reopen the Halki Theological School. He further praised U.S. backing of Greece and justice in Cyprus, while offering a prayer from St. Basil the Great for national leaders.
President Trump, in his remarks, stated: “We celebrate our cherished friendship with the Greeks, and we salute our Greek American patriots who are helping to make America great again.”
The event also included dignitaries such as Ambassador Kimberly Guilfoyle and businessman John Catsimatidis, as the President issued a proclamation recognizing March 25 as a national day celebrating Greek and American democracy.
