Putin Orders Preparations for St. Luke of Crimea Anniversary Celebrations
Russia has begun preparations for nationwide commemorations honoring St. Luke of Crimea's 150th anniversary and his legacy in faith and medicine.
MOSCOW — Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed an executive order directing the preparation of commemorative events marking the 150th anniversary of the birth of St. Luke of Crimea (Valentin Voino-Yasenetsky), which will be observed in 2027.
The decree, signed July 9 under the number 477, recognizes St. Luke's contributions to Orthodox spiritual traditions, medicine, and scientific development. The document highlights his dual legacy as both a hierarch and a renowned physician whose work continues to be remembered in religious and medical circles.
Under the presidential order, the Russian government has been instructed to establish an organizing committee within three months to coordinate the anniversary celebrations and approve a schedule of events. Authorities are also tasked with developing a comprehensive plan for activities throughout 2027.
The decree calls for participation from federal and regional officials, local governments, religious organizations, and other institutions in organizing events dedicated to the saint's life and work. St. Luke of Crimea, born Valentin Voino-Yasenetsky in 1877, was known for his service as an Orthodox bishop as well as his achievements as a surgeon, medical researcher, and author of influential works in medicine.
Previously, the UOJ reported that pilgrims waited hours to venerate St. Paisios’ tomb.
