Patr. Kirill celebrated Valaam’s spiritual renewal as a historic church was restored and consecrated after decades of destruction and neglect.

VALAAM — Patr. Kirill of Moscow and All Russia consecrated a restored church dedicated to the Life-Giving Spring Icon of the Mother of God during his visit to the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Valaam Monastery on July 10, 2026, marking another milestone in the revival of the historic monastic complex.

The rite of minor consecration was attended by several hierarchs, including Metr. Barsanuphius of St. Petersburg and Ladoga, Metr. Gregory of Voskresensk, Metr. Constantine of Petrozavodsk and Karelia, Bp. Pankraty of Troitsk, the monastery’s abbot, and Bp. Alexy of Ramensk, the patriarch’s personal secretary. Also present were officials and representatives of Russian public organizations.

Addressing those gathered after the service, Patr. Kirill emphasized the spiritual importance of consecrating churches, saying, “Every time we consecrate churches, we lay the foundations for a spiritual life that must develop, mature, and strengthen among our people.” He added that monastic churches possess a special grace that pilgrims can perceive, explaining, “That's why pilgrimage paths to those blessed places where spiritual struggles are accomplished never become overgrown.”

The Patriarch also highlighted Valaam Monastery’s endurance through wars and decades of atheistic rule, calling the monastery a place of profound spiritual significance. He presented the newly consecrated church with an icon of St. Alexander Nevsky depicted in monastic schema rather than armor, asking for the saint’s prayers for the Church and the Russian people.

The Life-Giving Spring Church, originally built in the early 19th century, was destroyed during World War II and later restored after being returned to the monastery in 1991.

Previously, the UOJ reported that Patr. Kirill congratulated Patr. John X on his enthronement anniversary.
