Romanian Orthodox Young Adults Gather for 2026 AROY National Conference

CHICAGO — Romanian Orthodox young adults gathered in Chicago from September 4–6 for the 2026 National Conference of the American Romanian Orthodox Youth (AROY), with the blessing of Abp. Nathaniel of Detroit and the Romanian Orthodox Episcopate of America. Bp. Andrei of Cleveland, auxiliary bishop of the Episcopate, participated throughout the weekend in prayer, fellowship, discussions, and other activities.

Hosted by Falling Asleep of the Ever-Virgin Mary Romanian Orthodox Parish, known as Saint Mary, the conference centered on the theme “I Am the Light of the World,” from John 8:12. Participants reflected on the responsibility of Orthodox Christians to bear witness to Christ in their daily lives, relationships, and communities.

The conference also highlighted the life of Archimandrite Roman Braga, a Romanian Orthodox confessor who endured imprisonment during the communist persecution in Romania before continuing his monastic and missionary ministry in North America. His cause for canonization is currently under consideration by the Canonization Commission of the Orthodox Church in America (OCA). Mother Christophora, Abbess of Holy Transfiguration Monastery in Ellwood City, PA, served as keynote speaker.

Participants also venerated the Myrrh-Streaming Most Holy Theotokos Icon of Hawaii during an Akathist at St. Mary Parish. The weekend included prayer, presentations, small-group discussions, fellowship, and an organizational meeting addressing the future of Romanian Orthodox youth ministry.

The gathering concluded September 6 with the Divine Liturgy celebrated by Bp. Andrei at St. Mary Parish, assisted by Very Rev. Fr. George Ursache. Organizers said the conference strengthened friendships, developed leadership skills, and encouraged young adults to take a more active role in the life and mission of the Church.
