The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia honored Patr. Bartholomew’s 35 years as Ecumenical Patriarch with a celebration of his spiritual leadership and ministry.

ISTANBUL — The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia commemorated the 35th anniversary of Patr. Bartholomew’s election to the Ecumenical Patriarchal Throne with a special celebration in Istanbul on October 22, 2026. The event took place at the Grand Cevahir Hotel and Convention Center and brought together Orthodox hierarchs, representatives of the Greek government, and members of the Archdiocese.

Organized by the Archdiocese’s Holy Eparchial Synod, the gathering was titled “The Life Was the Light,” drawing inspiration from John 1:4. Abp. Makarios of Australia praised the Patriarch’s decades of leadership, emphasizing his commitment to the Orthodox Church and his spiritual influence.

“Patriarch Bartholomew teaches us that time acquires power and gives meaning to all creation only when our life becomes a journey of light, because ‘the life was the light’ (John 1:4),” Abp. Makarios said. He also described the Patriarch’s ministry as a witness to Christ’s Resurrection and a source of spiritual encouragement.

The cultural program included Byzantine hymns, traditional dances, songs, and theatrical performances highlighting milestones in Patr. Bartholomew’s life and ministry. The celebration opened with a song originally composed for the 30th anniversary of his election, first performed in Sydney during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Patr. Bartholomew responded to the tributes, while Greek Culture Minister Lina Mendoni delivered greetings on behalf of the Greek government. Attendees also included hierarchs of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, Archons of the Great Church of Christ, Deputy Foreign Minister Alexandra Papadopoulou, and Greek Consul General Konstantinos Koutras.

Previously, the UOJ reported that Patr. Bartholomew visited Bulgaria for the St. John of Rila celebrations.
