Man and Church
The Apostle to the Plains
More than a century ago, a humble Orthodox priest traveled across the vast American Great Plains, bringing the Gospel, the Divine Liturgy, and the Holy Mysteries to scattered communities of Orthodox faithful.
Fr. Nicola Yanney, the first priest ordained by St. Raphael of Brooklyn, was among the great pioneers of Orthodox Christianity in America. From his parish in Kearney, Nebraska, he ministered to the faithful across an enormous territory, enduring hardship, personal tragedy, and tremendous sacrifice in service to Christ and His Church. His earthly ministry came to an end in 1918, when he contracted influenza while caring for the sick during the deadly pandemic.
On the 107th anniversary of Fr. Nicola Yanney's repose, UOJ-America had the privilege of attending the Trisagion memorial service offered in his memory, honoring a remarkable priest whose life and legacy continue to inspire Orthodox Christians today.
