BREAKING: ROCOR Canonizes Fr. Seraphim Rose
The venerable monastic, whose writings have influenced millions around the world, is the first U.S.-born saint of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia and the first American convert to be numbered among the saints.
MUNICH — According to UOJ sources, the Council of Bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia (ROCOR) has canonized Hieromonk Seraphim Rose as a saint. This was first reported by UOJ-Germany.
The decision was reportedly made during Monday's deliberations by the sobor and remains unofficial until a statement is issued by ROCOR. Tentatively, Fr. Seraphim is the first U.S.-born saint of ROCOR and the first American convert to be numbered among the saints.
Born Eugene Rose, Fr. Seraphim converted to Orthodoxy in 1962 and was a spiritual son of St. John of Shanghai and San Francisco. He was tonsured a monastic in 1968 and co-founded St. Herman of Alaska Monastery in Platina, California.
His writings have influenced generations of American Orthodox Christians and have been translated into numerous languages for the edification of the faithful around the world. A prolific translator, he also made a number of significant texts available in English for the first time.
Fr. Seraphim fell asleep in the Lord in 1982. Since that time, his veneration has become widespread, with many miracles attributed to his intercession.
