Despite widespread storm damage and power outages, St. Andrew’s parishioners united in prayer, mutual aid, and thanksgiving.

PENSACOLA, FL — Hurricane Isaias struck Pensacola and surrounding communities on Friday night, October 9, damaging homes and properties throughout the area, including those belonging to families of St. Andrew the Apostle Church. Although the church building itself escaped damage, nearly all parishioners experienced the storm’s effects.

According to Archpriest David Bleam, the parish’s pastor, approximately 95% of parishioners lost electricity, with many still awaiting restoration. Fallen trees and debris covered properties, and at least one family suffered partial roof collapse that led to significant water damage from heavy rainfall. The storm left neighborhoods across economic lines facing extensive cleanup and recovery, with lower-income residents often lacking insurance and the resources needed to remove fallen trees or repair damaged homes.

Despite these hardships, the parish community responded with mutual assistance and prayer. On Saturday and Sunday, faithful gathered at the church to offer thanksgiving and pray for those suffering from the storm, even though the building had no electricity. Bleam emphasized the importance of neighbors helping one another and accepting assistance during difficult times.

The pastor expressed gratitude to Metr. Saba, Bp. Nicholas, fellow clergy, and the wider Antiochian Archdiocese for their concern, prayers, and offers of support. Reflecting on Isaiah 54:11, he compared the storm’s suffering to stones that God transforms into precious gems, expressing hope amid the community’s ongoing recovery.
