An icon that survived the flames has become a beacon of hope for a Romanian family rebuilding after devastating loss.

BOTOȘANI, ROMANIA — A partially preserved icon discovered in the ashes of a family home destroyed by fire has become a powerful symbol of hope for a family with six children in northeastern Romania.

Firefighters responding to the blaze in Agafton, Botoșani County, found the icon among the ruins after flames consumed nearly everything inside the home. According to the Botoșani Inspectorate for Emergency Situations, the image of the Christ Child remained untouched by the fire. “For some, it may be a coincidence; for others, a sign,” the agency wrote, adding that the icon reminds people that “hope, faith, and the strength to move forward can survive even the hardest trials.”

Presbytera Anamaria Macuc, whose husband serves as parish priest at Pacea Church in Botoșani, said the icon had been painted by the children's father. Calling it “a living testimony that hope never dies and that this family is not alone,” she appealed for support for the family, who lost a home they had spent 15 years building. The couple has five sons, and the mother is expecting their sixth child.

“These people have never asked anyone for anything. They worked with faith and love, and today they stand powerless before this devastating reality,” Macuc wrote, encouraging donations of funds or building materials to help them rebuild. Information on how to donate can be found here.

Previously, the UOJ reported that St. Patrick's Church was saved as a fire engulfed a nearby convent.
